Because Sleep Matters

Common Spring Mattress

The common spring mattress is made up of three components: 1) the pring core, the foundation and the upholstery layers. As far as comfort and support are concerned, most people are most interested in the type of spring (coil) used in their mattress. These are the different types:

Bonnell coils are hour-glass shaped coils. They are most common in the cheapest types of mattresses.

Marshall coils are coils individually wrapped, usually in a fabric casement. They can be tempered or untempered. These types of coils are found in slightly more expensive mattresses as they dampen motion, allowing for movement on one side of the mattress without disrupting the individual at the other end. Beautyrest will often use this type of coil.

Offset coils are offset so that they can mold to the contours of the sleeping person's body. They are designed for ultimate comfort insofar as coil mattresses are concerned and are found in higher-priced mattresses.

Mira or continuous coils are coils that are joined to essentially form a single coil that runs the length and width of the mattress. These types of mattresses are typically firmer than the others and provide a tremendous degree of support. Serta uses this type of coil in their mattresses.
